Learn to Row

North Bay Rowing Club invites you to learn how to row. At various times throughout the year, we teach both sweep rowing and sculling. The difference between sweep and sculling is the type of oars used. In sweep boats, every person has one long oar, and the boats used are typically 8 and 4 person boats with a coxswain steering. In sculling boats, each person has two oars, one in each hand, and the boats used are typically single person boats, although 2 and 4 person sculling boats are also common.

Sweep rowing is typically taught in a three-week introductory program that includes six hours of instruction. Adults will be taught the basic rowing stroke and will practice rowing in an eight person shell. At the end of this three-week program, interested students will be invited to join the North Bay Rowing Club and participate in beginner boats.

Sculling can be taught through one of our sculling clinics or in a series of private lessons. (Please visit the lessons page for more information about private lessons.) Sculling clinics are typically two day clinics meeting for two hours on Saturday and Sunday. We spend the first day learning the basic rowing stroke in a four person boat, and then refine rowing skills and learn to steer in a stable open water single on the second day.

Masters Rowing (Post-Collegiate)

The North Bay Rowing Club Masters Program is for adults aged 21+. “Master” refers only to the age category, and includes people of all skill levels. Thanks to the mild climate and protected waterway of the Petaluma River, at North Bay Rowing Club we row year round, both competitively and recreationally.
