Wine Country Rowing Classic Guerilla Advertising Caper #1 |
On the evening of Wednesday, July 22nd, sometime around 6:30 pm, seven members of North Bay Rowing Club made a well-planned and exciting foray through the Wednesday Night Farmers' Market on 2nd Street between B & D Streets. Coxed by the imperturbable Skye Kramer-Baldwin, the crew of what we've renamed "The Red Rooster" (a de-rigged Red Rocket) a.k.a. "The Little Red Hen" (when carried by NBRC women with a great DIY attitude) paraded, ever so carefully, amongst the citizenry. The path down 1st Street away from the boatyard garnered some applause from a second-story window. Upon reaching the D-Street crossing, the LRH had turned many a head and slowed quite a bit of traffic. Note: the D-Street "Walk" light gives a de-rigged 4+ just enough time to get across!
Upon entering the actual Farmers' Market crowd, the crew, aided in great part by a very tall member carrying a silver-painted sweep oar of undetermined lineage and weight, had their up-and-over-heads, shoulder-switching routine down pat. Threaded skillfully into a pre-arranged meeting place alongside the patio seated diners at Graffiti, the carefully hand-decorated intuitive advertisement was successfully vetted by the head of the Market, and off it went, to the gratifying sounds of "ooh", "aah" and many citizens reading aloud, "Wine Country Rowing Classic" and "northbayrowing.org".
Besides one small tyke noting that "that's the longest kayak I've ever seen", a kid who clearly expected the crew to carry a rigged boat, for clarity's sake, the market goers and market vendors were suitably impressed by the sight of the lovely craft and regaled the crew with many positive comments.
As a finale, the crew hiked back to the boatyard via the Boulevard, enjoying the perfect blue skies and camaraderie of a successful caper. Back at the boatyard, the Little Red Hen was quickly and painlessly transformed back into the Red Rooster and laid carefully back to rest on its rack.
