NBRC Juniors complete successful, fun-filled season |
Here's a report by Megan Coble, one of their coaches, about the Southwest Regional Championships, their final competition of the year, held at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, on May 9th and 10th:
"A brief recap of Regionals:
Everyone was extremely excited to get to Sacramento; everything ran smoothly as we arrived for the 6:00pm C&C (Coaches and Coxswains) meeting on Friday, and rigged our quad and four to get the girls out for a practice row before the sun went down. Then it was back to the hotel where we had pizza by the pool and then a team meeting in the coaches' room.
The next morning there was anticipation and enthusiasm in the air as our coxswain, Skye, and the coaches went to the race course to make the coxswain weigh-ins at 7:45; the rest of the team following shortly to rig more boats. We all convened at our tent (shared with another small team from Arizona) and watched the first races begin. Our races that day were the women's novice coxed quad and the women's four. Our quad (Elliane, Katie, Alice, and Laurel) raced mid morning and MADE FINALS! The whole team was hoarse with cheering and excitement. The women came in to rest and get nourishment, waiting for the finals race later that evening. The four (Kellie, Katie, Emily, and Sophia) went out and did outstanding themselves; they looked great coming across the finish line and everyone was very proud of them for doing their very best. After hours of team bonding at the tent, shopping at the vendors, and enjoying the races and atmosphere of Regionals, it was time for the quad to go back out for their finals race. They came down the last 250 looking exceptional, very controlled with clean technique; they placed 5th out of 6--everyone was extremely proud of them! We placed the boats up in slings and then! headed out to the Spaghetti Factory with the whole team and the paren ts; everyone was ready for some dinner. Then everyone came back to the hotel for some rest and relaxation.
Sunday everyone arrived at the race course mid morning to help and to cheer on the women's double (Laurel and Katie), whose race was near afternoon. The double did great in their race and right after that Mark had his singles race where he did a great job, too. Everyone helped de-rig boats and soon we were all in cars heading back to Petaluma!"
