McNear Landing Small Craft Centennial and Potluck! Saturday August 28th 10-11:30 am. A PSC3 event. |
WHAT? Demonstrations of whatever we want to show those folks on land! We will be joined by SSU, Petaluma Paddlers, and Team Clavey.
It's a show, a performance, a semi-scripted event, followed, in turns, by retirement to the land, where we will eat and drink with the locals at the public park within the McNear Landing housing development.
WHERE: On the river where we can be seen by the residents and others. This is an event that will be open to the public.
WHEN: Saturday, August 28th, about 11 am to 12noon. Nosh on land!!
WHY?
McNear Landing (the group of houses on the starboard side of the river as you head to the 101 bridge) is a development with special significance to us on the water. It is the only large residential development we encounter, and it is part of our river environment*. Likewise, we all are part of the residents' river environment. Think about it; the heron webcam is posted in the window of one of those river-facing houses!
Just as DOTR is a way to introduce all of the sports that take place on the river, the McNear Landing Boatfest is a way to pinpoint a particular portion of the public, one with a heavy investment in the river and its life forms, even paddlers, kayakers, rowers and surfskiers! Apparently the city was even supposed to provide them with a dock, and will be pressed to do so. This population could be a source of advocacy for PSC3, but because of a lack of communication and outreach, is much in the dark about all of our activities and our group. In a couple of hours, we can change all that!
*A postscript: for rowers, McNear Landing is significant as the site of the family home of George P. McNear, and the location of the shed in which he stored his single, which he rowed when he was in town (he rowed for Cornell).
Please contact me if you'd like to enter a certain boat in the festivities! Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome. Details can be pinned down later, but this will be a pot-luck, and not everyone has to row to be invited to lunch! Bring your friends and family to show them what you do!
